The Best of Bellydance 2012 *Bellydance Competition*

Calling all bellydancers! It's your turn to sparkle and spin this holiday season! Pera Dance will host the 2011 Best of Bellydance! Competition will be Saturday 7 January from 6:30pm-9pm. Bellydancers will showcase the best of their bellydance capabilities.

Requirements:
Each dancer is asked to put as much into their presentation as they possibly can to show their skill and knowledge of the Middle Eastern and African regions and the people who live there. Fusion/TribalFusion/American Tribal Style artists will showcase their ability to mix and incorporate the regions into modern aesthetics. It's a great challenge but we know Atlanta is up to the task!
Competition is all inclusive for all levels of bellydance. 1 Grand Prize of $200 plus 2nd & 3rd place gifts and giveaways!

Dancers will be judged on:

• Skill, ability to execute the basics of bellydance

• Costume choice

• Cultural representation or Fusion Recognition: ability to convey to the audience what genre you represent or which genres you are fusing

Rules:
You must be over 18+ years of age
Both Males and Females are welcome
Presentation is limited to 5 minutes max
No flames or liquids as props

Must pre-register by 1 January
$35 before 24 December and $45 thereafter (up to the 1st of Jan)

Doors open at 6:30pm
Competition begins at 7pm
Cost is $7 to attend as a guest, $12 at the door
Must be at least 8 years of age to attend

Najm Al Cairo Comes to Pera Dance

Pera Dance is proud to be the event facility for Najm al Cairo featuring Aleya! Next Sunday the 13th  November in West Buckhead Atlanta, all are welcome to come and be apart of an Egyptian dance workshops with this great raqs artist! Our resident Raissa Andye spoke to Aleya in an exchange fostered by Saniyah Raks some weeks ago. She also viewed a video of this artist and here's what she had to say:
"I was impressed with her skill, movement and overall spirit. She is what you expect from Egypt. Strong, full of energy and all around someone you enjoy watching. I did take more than one look at her videos because I was engulfed in her style. As for her overall demeanor and attitude, which is something very important to consider if you plan to spend any length of time with someone, I was very happy with it. If a person communicates with you  via email with emoticons and colloquial expressions it certainly helps you get the feel of what kind of person they're going to be face to face.  Oftentimes, an email is the first impression. And in this case she is someone that I would want to work with and study from to drill and pick up new skills. I found Aleya to be pleasant and eager to be "on board," ready to make new friends and I'm excited about meeting her in person next week."

Najm al Cairo will present the workshop from 12:30pm-2:30pm at your home for International Dance, Pera Dance Studio. Aleya will have costumes and the store will also be open as it is whenever there is an event taking place. So attendees should be able to get a great deal of instruction and take a treat or two home for themselves.

She is noted for working with Adam Basma, who is a huge name in Middle Eastern Dance. Not only is he talented but he puts on one heck of a show. And having someone from his group in our studio is just a thrill and an honour. Aleya also has  a fun blog. Take a moment to read about this dancer and her day to day activities...life in Cairo and a peek at what it was like being a dancer during the Arab Spring. She used to live in Los Angeles and moved to Cairo in order to immerse herself into the actual culture. For those who write us continuously asking how to merge into Arab culture, Aleya is a great example of one who does that. She speaks Arabic (or at least she did with Andye) and is very appreciative of ethnic cultures, understanding clearly that its best to get the lessons directly from the locals. So come share in her knowledge and skill. Gain a better  understanding of what it is like to live and work abroad in a coveted entertainment industry and most important have fun doing it!

Turkish Romany, Bellydance Special 1 September -1 December 2011

Join us every Thursday and Saturday to get a great bellydance workout and lesson from our very own Turkish native Aya of Istanbul. Aya has had the blessing of growing up multi-cultural with time in both Turkiye (Turkey) and the United States. Fluent in Turkish and English she relays to students the extra special information and song translations so that everyone covets from the culture.

Each Thursday the class will go over basic moves as well as advanced bellydance techniques to push each person to the next level in their dance education. It's more than just a little shimmy here and there it's a full on double impact bellydance class that you won't forget.

FAQs:
Do I have to go to the class every week?
A. No. The classcard will not expire. If you miss a class during the 8 weeks you can pick up anytime. Each class goes over a different technique and you will not fall behind.

Can I buy the card in person:
 A. Yes. Feel free to ask for the Bellydance Special at the registration desk located at the front of the store

What if I already have a class card? Do I need to buy a new one for this class:
A.No, you can use any current class cards toward your attendance of this class.

What do I wear?
A. comfortable clothing in which you can move around

Can my friend come and watch me take the class?
A. Everyone that enters the studio must have a class card. There is no spectator section of the class.

I have a child. Can they come?
A. Currently Pera Dance does not provide childcare. Please arrange for your little ones to have supervision at all times.

We love to host our local international community functions all year long. If you need a great space to entertain your friends, social group and family gatherings we're more than happy to host you at Pera Dance.

Cross Cultural Dance Joins Pera Dance Studio Atlanta 22 August!

Cross Cultural Dance Company is now at Pera Dance Studio!

Classes designed to engage students in dance movement through world dance.

These classes will concentrate on theatrical stage craft for solo/group choreography and improvisational solo's in World Dance.  Exercises will be borrowed from different world movement traditions in performance arts, theater and dance, designed to engage a student to dance with presence and meaning.  Learn stage presence, music interpretation, emoting, using space, dynamics and texture to help breathe life into a dance 'character' within the 'story' of the music.

Flamenco Artist and Dancer Javier Heredia coming to Pera Dance August 2011

Flamenco Dance originated in India believe it or not. What we see today is a mix of a long trail of history as the warriors of Rajasthan fought off their would be permanent invaders into modern day Iran. As they began to roam and encounter trouble they found themselves in Egypt. While there life was not easy. Why they did not go back to Rajasthan is unknown. But some say this was the turning point in early Rroma history. These great warriors and now roaming global citizens split into two paths. Some going north toward modern day Romania, Hungary, Croatia and others heading west through North Africa (Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco...and eventually to Spain). What they developped along the way was a strong, vibrant history that gave us Flamenco as we know it today.

Looking at Kathak dance in its original form you will find the ground work for Flamenco. The touching of the skirts, flowers in one's hair and more are not all documented on the early path of the Rroma but their culture and customs have been preserved within their own societies. Great dancers such as Carmen Amaya and her family have kept this going. Movies like Latcho Drum show the blessings that Rroma (Gypsy) culture has given us...and inspire us as dancers to drop that harmful term "Gypsy" which was used in a derogatory way toward this strong group to call them as they want to be...Man, Rrom, The Rroma.

This summer Pera Dance is proud to have the wonderful and talented Javier Heredia in a Flamenco dance workshop. He accompanies Atlanta Flamenco dancer Rebecca Lutz (seen often with the renowned Aire Flamenco at Fanoos Persian Restaurant) for a spectacular afternoon of learning the essence and artistry of Flamenco. Its a cultural dance that has been passed down from generation to generation. Learn from this 3rd generation Rroma artist and dancer direct from Spain.

Bellydance Prop Focus Series: Candle Dance/Fire Tray Dance/Tea Candles

This Saturday!! Enjoy Bellydance Workshop for Fire Dance using Candles! This is an excellent class for those who want to work in restaurants, learn the tips and tricks used by bellydancers worldwide and add extra pizazz to their shows.

This is a prop focus workshop for Fire Dance using Candles. Learn how to dance with two candles, three candles, tray balancing, fire safety, and MORE! We will also spend some time discussing safety and use of other fire toys such as Fire Fans and Fire Scimitar.

Our awesome, multitalented and ohhhh so fine Rebecca DeShon teaches Hoopdance every Saturday here at Pera Dance. We're delighted to share with you her thoughts on this fun, effective and fantastic dance art.

Through hoop dance I have found a calming centering meditation which helps me release the negative energy and make space for prosperity and bliss. Hoop dance builds core strength, tones your entire body, provides an intense cardio workout, increases energy, develops balance and coordination, increases flexibility, clears and quiets the mind, reduces stress, improves self confidence, generates joy and laughter, improves one’s mood, and opens up creative self expression.  After spending time in your hoop will find yourself more joyful with a lot less stress! Hooping is beautiful, transforming and mesmerizing ...you just may find yourself hooked!!! Your hoop is a useful tool for fun, fitness, meditation or playful sensuality! The possibilities are endless for body, mind and spirit to reconnect in the infinite circle.

Hula hooping has changed my life in so many ways. I never thought it could ever have such a profound impact on my life! It went from something I once perceived as a gimmick to a true healthy obsession in my life! It has lifted me out of the depths of self loathing depression by opening up my heart and mind to creative self expression! The hoop is such a soothing rhythm, it quickly turned into my ‘moving meditation’. it helps to center my energy and gives me time to clear my head and focus my energy.

I began hooping in the summer of 2008 and through constant practice and effort, acquired my Hoopnotica Certified Teacher certificate in the late fall of that year. I had been teaching and performing in NY until home called me back to Atlanta in the winter of 2009. My life hasn’t been the same since; I want to share the beauty I have found in hoop dance with everyone I meet.

Count it down! Samba Diallo comes to Pera Dance Studio this summer!!! He'll present a wonderful dance workshop filled with Raqs Sharqi and Bellydance techniques used in the heart of the Maghreb and beyond.

Learn how to emphasize hip movements with his special raqs technique that has been enjoyed for years.
Coupé Décalé is also described as... a type of popular dance music originating from Côte d'Ivoire and the Ivorian diaspora in Paris, France. Drawing heavily from Zouglou and Congolese rhythms, Coupé-Décalé is a very percussive style featuring African samples, deep bass, and repetitive, minimalist arrangements...

Samba Diallo is a master African Dance instructor from Cote D'Ivoire who has worked around the world with famous African artists and musicians. He holds lectures and workshops throughout the United States and is currently in Atlanta for an extended time teaching and training dancers in the art of African Performance and live drums. With a consistent following (many of whom praise him for his encouragement in their weight loss and his ultra energetic courses that leave you revived and filled with knowledge) Samba Diallo is one of the best African Dancers and Drummers on in the region! We are excited that he has chosen Pera Dance Studio as his next stop!
